Actual Thoughts on Moar Code Geass – Yay or Nay?

They already got a son. Never mind, that’s Cheese-kun.

Sunrise has been out of the scene for some time now. I’ve missed them. You’ve missed them. I’ve missed Sunrise being Sunrise. You’ve also missed them. I knew they had to come back eventually but I wasn’t expecting them to come back with more Code Geass in 2010 (a year with two Zero’s on it)

It’s been over a year since R2 ended and I’m still looking back on it every now and then, I haven’t forgotten. So I am not going to lie and say that I am not thrilled to hear that I might get to some more of Code Geass after all. I am actually ecstatic to hear the news but there is one tiny winy problem. Is Lelouch going to be on it? I cannot ignore that there is a side of me that doesn’t want me to see more CG or Lelouch. After the epic finale that Code Geas not all of us were that eager to see a continuation of the show. I was also very against this idea since a continuation will only lessen R2 ending. I didn’t want that. Yet, here I am.

They’ll have to reveal whether Lelouch is alive or not in case they’re planning on bringing him back in some way.  The R2 finale was a huge deal. Some people say this. The producers say that. It’s been confirmed. It hasn’t. Too many theories to count. Frankly, it was an open ending. Everyone is free to pick the one they like the most. The ones in charge can do whatever they want to make it the story work. If he’s alive then put him back again to wreck some havoc. If he’s dead then revive him so he can wreck havoc again. The Geass can grant wishes, right?  See, no problem. Actually..

Back or not?

You know this was coming. Say. This new Code Geass might be on set X years into the future. I don’t  know 15, 20, 50. CG 2099?  Where Suzaku is killed/destroyed and Britannia either doesn’t exist or has become something worse. New laws, new knightmares, new kingdoms. The earth has become once against an oppressive world where Lelouch is forced to come back retake his position as Zero to make the world right again. It’ll be like old times. It’ll be epic.

This CG may be about an OVA or even a movie. They could also give the old Code Geass a new twist. Really? Yeah. Say. Change a crucial event in the story providing the show with a totally different route. New enemies. New allies. New characters. New Geass. Does this sound satisfying enough? Meh, I asked for an OVA a few weeks after the show ended only if it tied things up nicer than the show did but we never got any. At this moment and with all the commotion that Sunrise is making I doubt that this will be merely an OVA relating to what happens after R2. So maybe a Movie?

A movie would be fine but it might not enough to satisfy the Code Geass deprived fans myself included. Some wished deep down to see more Code Geass but what was stopping them from wanting moar was the train wreck that R2 was and also the open finale the show had. We expected to end there but it was also open enough for a continuation. If it were a movie then I don’t think they’re going to just compress the whole show in one long movie. That doesn’t exactly sound like a ‘rebirth’ to me. It has to be something drastic and definitely new to us. So what does that leave us?

This ‘rebirth of Code Geass’ gives me chills. Rebirth.. as revival of the show, of course. What exactly does Sunrise mean? I think that they might work on those Code Geass Spin-Offs i.e manga. I, for one, have read Nightmare of Nunally even written a review on it. Just haven’t published it. It’s a great story but a bit messy but I wouldn’t be against Sunrise animating THAT though a couple of changes will be necessary. For one thing they would have to make the it longer and easier to follow. There’s also Code Geass: Tales of an Alternate Shogunate  and  there’s also Suzaku of the Counterattack…

In case you have already forgotten

As for Zero goes.. I don’t want to see Suzaku as Zero. I mean, would you? R2 finale was great but seeing Spinsaku in that Zero outfit was so wrong to me. He was just a bastard. No offense Suzaku fan if there are any reading this blog. But he sucks. Notice the present tense. I’ll be thrilled if he isn’t part of the new project. But you know what this means, don’t you? Somebody else might take his place. Another spinning-traitorous-contradicting-self-righteous-jerk with more issues than the main characters to serve as the opposing force in this new Code Geass. I can’t say that Sunrise will go this way but I’d say it’s  high. Let it rip LET IT RIP!

This Zero is slightly amused

I liked how ambiguous Sunrise is being with putting a poster of ZERO. Notice the picture. It is ZERO. They aren’t showing Lelouch. They aren’t showing Susaku. The cat or any other character of the Code Geass world making the fanbase question what this code Geass will be about… then today they reveal this new manga project :

Code Geass: Shikkoku no Renya Manga to Launch in 2010

Source here

“The January issue of Kadokawa Shoten’s Newtype magazine is announcing on Thursday that Tomomasa Takuma (Code Geass: Nightmare of Nunnally, Kurogane Communication) is drawing a manga that is tentatively titled Code Geass: Shikkoku no Renya (Code Geass: Jet-Black Renya or Code Geass: Renya of the Blackness) next year. Goro Taniguchi, the director and story co-creator of the original Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion television anime series, created the new manga’s story concepts and is scripting the story. This is the first manga that Taniguchi is directly scripting himself.

The story takes place in the same official Code Geass history as the anime, but in a different era. The title character, Renya, is a 17-year-old boy with a mechanical left arm and shuriken throwing stars as his weapons of choice. The story begins when Renya encounters a mysterious, perpetually young witch named “Reifū C.C.” C.C. has appeared in Japan’s historical Edo era to seek a new partner for a covenant. Meanwhile, a mysterious man, with a striking resemblance to the character Lelouch of the original anime, also appears with unknown intentions.

The new manga is part of next year’s new Code Geass project launch. Code Geass producer Yoshitaka Kawaguchi revealed on the franchise’s website that the new project will feature the simultaneous releases of serialized comics, music, new products under development, and visual works.”

Is this ‘it’? Different era. A guy with a mechanical arm and with shurken throwing stars? What?  So it turns out that Lelouch WILL be in it. Ok, not exactly him but someone who looks exactly like him will be on it. What do you think? More or less Sunrise might be trying to create a similar character to Lelouch in terms of thinking and possibly in genius (best as he possibly can) and make him go through struggles and epic battles. It’d be like the first season of the show and this new main character will progress in a similar way only his background will be different. That’s what I think more or less. The downside is that he will be compared to Lelouch to no end even if he isn’t exactly him. Like, Lelouch would have done otherwise and isn’t this pretty much Lelouch 2?  This new Code Geass might need someone completely different.

I’m not sure if this will be the new CG they are talking about but not totally against this idea as it could open a different world for Code Geass yet not totally undermine its prequel. I’m not so crazy about this new character though. Could he possibly live up to the role of Zero? Are we really not supposed to compared the two of them? How is this going to work out?

No matter what they choose I am without a doubt going to be watching this new Code Geass. Hopefully, the producers will make the right decisions in the end and pick the best choices to satisfy the fans as possible as they can. 2010 isn’t that far. I will be waiting.

  1. Lelouch was one of a kind, but they could continue the “Geass” story forever. It wouldn’t be the same as the first time, but I don’t see why they couldn’t turn it into a franchise like Gundam. The only challenge would be making each story distinct.

I’m guessing they’re going to take the 15 or 20 years or so in the future route vs. a direct spinoff or a OVA movie or anything like that. I’d be ok with that. As much as I thought Lelouch made the show, I do think there’s enough potential in the “Geass” mystique to turn out some really good stories. So bring it on!

    • That doesn’t sound like such decision to me either. We’ve seen it before in games and in anime. It would still part of the series but each new show would have its own appeal. A good example would be the Gundam franchise that you mentioned. Fans will have to adjust to it if this is indeed the case.

Come to think of it, It was Code Geass : “Lelouch of the Rebellion.’ not ‘Lelouch’ So the Code Geass universe can go on without him as strange as that sounds. Even though Lelouch was without a doubt a great character he was still part of the CG series, him leaving is part of the process not the end of the CG series. His chapter might be over after all and it might be some for a new chapter to start.

As we’ve seen in the new manga they’re releasing someone similar to Lelouch appears in that manga so someone like him might pop up every now in the following ‘Code Geass’ series. Not as the protagonist anymore but as the mysterious force that stirs things up.

  2. At it’s heart, Code Geass was about the Geass. The power of Kings that brings absolute solitude and so on. The idea of the Geass and what it symbolises can be used in so many different ways that I always thought the eventual Geass spin-off would involve different characters with a similar Geass-esque storyline. All it needed was for Sunrise to have the balls not to have Lelouch and co. still in it. And they’ve done that. As you said, the ‘Lelouch of the Rebellion’ was just added onto the end. Now we have Code Geass: Renya of the totally-out-of-place-in-17th-centuary-mehcanical-arm

  4. If there’s gonna be a man that resembles Lelouch greatly…can we please have a new Shirley? Loved the old Shirley but got killed by a bastard who then got a freaking “happy ending”. Rolo, you deserved more punishment…

  5. I agree the series was about the “geass” at its heart, the problem with making new chapters is that Sunrise may lose a large portion of there fan base, do they really wanna lose a large part of there fan base? and hey maybe im wrong, maybe they wont, but I do actually hope they go the future route and have lelouch in the story one way or another, a lot of fans of the series where not fans of “Geass” but fans of “Lelouch”
