A Walk Along Memory Lane : The Power of Words – Musing on Anime Quotes and Moments

Get your favorite show here

Image what an anime would be without voice actors. Image what a manga would be without dialogues. Pretty empty, huh? What captivates the viewer isn’t only what he sees but also what the he hears and understands from it. All of our favorite characters became our fav for a reason. Our favorite shows become our favorite because they greatly appealed to us in away that others didn’t. But let’s not forget that the author or studio went through the trouble to not only creating the show but also to give every single character a certain personality.  As a result, a fusion of  good characters and an interesting plot into possibly a unique experience.

In their words we can identify and interpret what the author wants us to see. In amine we have different types of shows, some are based on interactions  among the main characters (slice of life) such as Minami-ke. Other shows main appeal is its great dialogues such as Bakemonogatari. Other shows based on pure action are more focus on few selected catch phrases that blow us away. Lastly there are those  shows that are centered around one main charismatic character such as Code Geass. In these shows we cheer for them (or against) and they grow on us.  Quotes are important because not only it makes a difference how things are said but also the context of the message itself. It matters how it affects and how it appeals to the viewer, be that new or an older fan. Their purpose is to make an impression on us and communicate the uniqueness of a character (or lack of) and sometimes of the show in general.

I borrowed most of the quotes from a resourceful site called Anime Quotes (also of the idea of this post) so check it out in case you’re interested in more anime quotes.  As for this post, don’t worry most quotes are made in a way that even if you aren’t familiar with the title you’ll be able to understand what I mean and maybe about it more about the show. Feel free to share of your own anime quote.

Air TV

The days which are wrapped in the scene of summer and to pass gently An encounter with the girls repeated in the sunlight Summer continues to where as well.  She is waiting in the air.

This quote is repeated several times throughout Air TV. It makes the viewer ponder about who exactly the show is referring to. The show talks about a never ending summer… 10,000 days… This also is the phrase that starts everything and it is deeply connect tot the story–the girl in the sky..  Who is she? Why must she be rescued?

Griffith!

Berserk

“In this world, is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law? Is it like the hand of God hovering above? At least it is true that man has no control; even over his own will.” (???)

Berserk is a show set in a medieval times where fighting was everything if you weren’t nobility or a peasant. This quote is the first thing we see and it is repeated before the actual episode starts. It’s actually repeated before any episode starts. We listened to an omnipotent narrator speaks in a strong voice and repeat this as it were fact. The viewer is presented with the image of an almost inhuman hand holding a strange relic. We don’t know what this symbolizes but know that by the end of the show this phrase couldn’t make any more sense. I was terribly astonished when the identity of the narrator is actually revealed. Do you believe this claim?

Two hands Revy

Black Lagoon

“God is emotional bullshit.” (revy)

“I can show you what color your brain is.” (Revy)

You don’t push Revy around. Ever. Revy is so aggressive that she just might kill you. Phrases like this just pop out of her mouth I swear. You’d find it strange that she wouldn’t. I think Revy would be Scar’s female counterpart or something similar imo. Revy doesn’t run away from no one. She isn’t a lady. She doesn’t need to be one. Armed with two twin guns Revy will kill whoever gets in her way. Revy’s got her own code too that certainly doesn’t involve God. Among the vast sea of weak female characters in anime Revy comes as a nice surprise. She’s a strong person who doesn’t rely on others. She’s someone who is capable of taking out a whole army if she wanted to. When is the second season coming out?

See you in space

Cowboy Bebop

“I was younger then, I wasn’t afraid of anything, I didn’t think about dying for a second. I thought I was invincible. Then I met some girl. I wanted to live, I started to think like that; for the first time I was afraid of death. I had never felt like that before.”
(Spike Spiegel)

“I’m not going there to die. I’m going to find out if I’m really alive.” (Spike Spiegel)

I’m watching a dream I’ll never wake up from.. (Spike)

“Look at my eyes, Faye. One of them is a fake because I lost it in an accident. Since then, I’ve been seeing the past in one eye and the present in the other. So, I thought I could only see patches of reality, never the whole picture. I felt like I was watching a dream I could never wake up from. Before I knew it, the dream was over.” (Spike)

This is what I am talking about. Spike comes off as a simple guy but he isn’t that simple as he makes himself out to be. Spike is without a doubt an interesting character.  His phrases are so real, simple, and sometimes so strangely profound. ‘I felt like I was watching a dream I could never wake up from. Before I knew it, the dream was over.’ Brings the viewer to understand his past and his current situation. Spike has always been torn between the past and the present. He cannot let go of the past and seeks a way to get back what he lost even if he might lose his life in the process.

Just as planned

Death Note

I am Justice! I protect the innocent and those who fear evil. I’m the one that will become the god of a new world that every one desires!! (Yagami Light)

The phrase uses the term that what is most debated in Death Note :  “Justice”. Who can say what justice is when such term is so ambitious? Pushed by the unsatisfactory and unfair world, Light Yagami Yagami grew disgusted of the world he lived in. Because he was a normal human being he couldn’t make things  right for everyone but he never gave up on his dream. Light thought of himself as the only justice in the world after the Death Note granted his biggest dream in exchange for his life and so he did.

Humans are interesting (Ryuk)

Ryuk is the only one who doesn’t get in real trouble. He is the bystander that looks everything from above without caring much. Ryuk is so used to ripping humans’ souls but he never really spent the time to understand humans. Maybe he just didn’t care much. But Yagami Light was the first who really surprised him with his outstanding wits for simple student who wishes to remake the world with merely the help of a killing book isn’t something he sees everyday. The time he spends with Light made his endless and uneventful life a bit more interesting. Why do you think this quote interesting?

If I sit like a normal person my investigative abilities would be half as effective. (L)

This is a pretty funny moment when L and Light were having a conversation at some sort of food joint. Light was annoyed that L was drawing too much attention by sitting like that in a public place to what L responds with this phrase. This moment stresses how peculiar of a guy he is since he’s probably the one who sits like that in the world. What makes it funny is that he was  probably 100% serious about it.

If you cannot win at the game, if you cannot solve the puzzle, you are just another loser. (Near)

I was actually surprised to hear Near say this, seeing that he respected L so much. Still, it gives us a clear and strong understanding of his personality. As much as I dislike Near I find some partial truth in his claim. This is the message he gives us: No matter how much do you, it will be worthless if you don’t success. Winning is everything. Losing means death. If you can’t success you just weren’t good enough. If Near fails then he is also a loser too and only death awaits him. I think that by detaching himself and from the thought of losing is what make him a decent opponent.

Elfen’s song

Elfen lied

When you’re miserable, you need someone more miserable than yourself.. (Lucy)

If I remember correctly Lucy comes to this realization when she was little kid and in that  god-awful orphanage. In this episode happens one of most disturbing and revolving scenes I’ve seen in anime involving an animal cruelty. How cruel Lucy was treated by other kids and society pushed Lucy over the very edge. She realized that people need someone else to be more miserable than others to gain satisfaction. Maybe payback or a way to push their frustrations onto others. Somebody has to pay. For one happy person there’s a miserable one. Humans are too cruel–she thought.

There’s no way I’d come to like a girl with such strange horns. Then why did you… I told you I love unusual animals… Elfen Lied (Kohta to Lucy)

This is the screwed up side of Lucy that messes up with Lucy’s mind. Telling her that Kohta’s friendship wasn’t real at all. She tells Lucy that Kohta considered Lucy a wild and an amusing creature like those in the zoo. She lies to her and tells her that in reality, Lucy wasn’t Kohta’s friend, she just part of his sick amusement. Lucy eventually buys into it. It’s all over.

I do know

Excel Saga

“The world is corrupt. In order to prevent further degeneration the world must be set to rights. However, if suddenly unit the world the ignorant masses will surely have trouble keeping up pace. Thus we shall start with this one country. However, in order to avoid pushing ourselves too hard and to be extra prudent, we will go one step further. With this there will be nothing to worry about. A reasonable plan to conquest that allows for some leeway. In other words are goal is .. (the conquest of this city)

Excel Saga will be forever known as one of the weirdest known to man. The show is really out there. Ilpallazo’s favorite speech starts with “The world is corrupt!” and rambles on and on. This quote and scene reminds us of the contrast between the extreme seriousness of ACROSS’S leader and the stupidity of this hilarious show.

The ‘specialist’

Full metal panic!

“Wait! If you cut off negotiations, it can only lead to war. Accept a truce, and I will listen to whatever you have to say. Let’s work toward a compromise!” (Sagara Sousuke)

Moments like this we can fully appreciate how clueless Sagara is. Thinking of everything as negotiation between parties is what you would really expect of him. Of course, this is clearly over the top version of a child soldier  suddenly thrown into high school to take care of a bishoujo high school girl but that is what makes it funny.  What’s makes it so hilarious is that Sagara actually buys into what he says.

Hagaren

Full metal alchemist

“Our names are given to us by God. I have betrayed God, and so I no longer have a name. (Scar)

Scar is badass guy who set on a journey of pure revenge. Scar left his real name behind a long time ago. He went against everything his people and he believed in that’s why he has no right to go back. He lost who he is. He’s become something else. He is Scar.

On the day we left, we burned down the family home and all the familiar things inside. Because some memories… aren’t meant to leave traces. (Alphonse Elric)

This is another quote that is repeated in FMA. The quote determinates the Eric brothers’ determination to not turn back until they’ve found a way to get their bodies back.

You can call me Roy Mustang. Or just Lieutenant Colonel. Hell, you can call me the Flame Alchemist. Whatever you do, remember the pain. (Roy Mustang)

Without a doubt, Roy is one of the coolest characters of this show. He’s smart, funny, and a fairly manipulative person. He’s a very flashy character and one of the most powerful allies against the homunculus. When Roy steps into the scene you know that someone is going to be burned to a crisp.

The Count

Gankutsuou

“Wait and hope”

The biggest statement in The Count of Monte Cristo. Wait and hope is another line that presents what this show really is. I won’t spoil what it exactly means. You’ll have to watch the show to find out why this is so important.

Most hardcore otakus ever

Genshiken

“kasukabe-san. You were actually a childhood friend character?
Wow! Such people really exist!
I’ve never met one!
You guy really reek of otakuness
Oh, man, she’s starting to look cute of all the sudden…
Same here..
I bet along with her violent side, she has a cute side, too!” (Genshiken room)

Genshiken was one of the show that made me think that I wasn’t watching an anime. Looking back on it, I doubt that I was able to fully caught all the references in this show. As strange as it sounds, seeing a bunch of obsessive anime fans ramble away about anime in the most serious tone was too entertaining. Probably most viewers felt the same way.

I see Madarame as the guy has more guts to display his anime passion more than most anime fans could but also as the one they wouldn’t want to ever reach his level of otakuness. This specific quote cracked me up even more now that it did a few years ago simply because I fully understand what was so hilarious about it. The Genshiken members are thrilled to learn that Saki is an actual ‘childhood friend’ like those used in eroge and anime so commonly. Their expressions after they learn that such people actually exists in real life is what makes it so hilarious.

Being honest is his policy

Great Teacher Onizuka

“A brat who is afraid to be hurt isn’t qualified to love someone.” (Onizuka Eikichi)

It certainly sounds like something Onizuka would say. Onizuka, the greatest teacher of all time as he dubbed himself or GTO for short. Onizuka would definitely make it to my top 30 favorite male characters of all time. He is a hilarious guy or what happens to him is almost as hilarious as he is. He’s frank, aggressive, impulsive, and not very smart to be frank. But he pushes forward no matter what. And he pushes through! Strangely as it may sound (if you haven’t watched the show) Onizuka gives great life lesson throughout the show to his troublesome students.  His quotes are memorable because of their value. Most of us could learn a thing from this great guy.

Search and destroy

Hellsing

The Bird of Hermes is my name, eating my wings to make me tame. (Alucard)

What’s wrong? You’ve only had two legs blown off… Come at me! Summon your familiars! Polymorph your body! Regenerate your legs and stand up! Come, the night is still young… Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! The fun’s yet to come! Hurry! Hurry!. (Alucard)

One of my favorite’s battles from the Hellsing series. Ok, this might be spoil-ish but what the hell. It’s the fight between Alucard and one of the Valentine brothers who burst in and made a total mess out of Hellsing HQ. Alucard, cruel as he is, lets Luke think that they’re fighting on par and even gives him the advance to make things interesting. The best part is when Alucard reveals that he’s been faking it from the start or rather that he is been holding back.  He breaks his own seal and unleashes his real powers totally overpowering Luke.

Alucard is deeply disappointed that Luke is far too weak to be considered a real opponent when he sees a frightened look on Luke’s face to make things worse he calls Alucard a monster. (being one himself)  Alucard is disgusted with this outcome and his demon dogs tear apart Luke’s like it’s nothing more than trash.

Morita-san!

Honey and Clover

“But I realized why I was lost… It’s not because I don’t have a map… It’s because I don’t have a destination… ” (Takemoto)

“When I was little, I didn’t understand why Ferris wheels existed. They were just sluggish and went up high. I got bored with it after only one ride. The roller coaster and the loop slider… I only paid attention to the thrilling rides. But… I kind of understand now. Ferris wheels are for slowly cutting across the sky with the person you like and maybe saying things like, “Isn’t this a little scary?”.

Out of most slice of life shows I’ve watched H&C is one of the few that has scored a 10.  The quotes is talking about the time that the main character went  on a journey to find his real self. At some point in life everyone questions who they are and where they’re going. Takemoto like many didn’t understand who he was and what his destination was.  Going on a journey to find himself. Meeting with his friends, understating his them, understanding himself gave him a better understand of what he was doing wrong and not to despair. This quote is memorable because it ends the main character finally stops doubting himself for the first time.

Queen of yangire

Higurashi

USO  DA!”

Rena’s catch phrase and one of most popular phrases in anime. If you haven’t heard of this phrase before… well I don’t know what to tell you. Rena Ryuugu, the main protagonist of Higurashi, is portrayed as a timid and weak girl in the show. It all changes when she comforts Keichi on suspicion that he is lying. The epic effect of USO DA is multiplied by infinity because the viewer does not expect this timid girl to act in such aggressive way. This moment opens the path for her reign of yangireness and also the greatness of this great series.  I won’t forget that moment… The first time I heard it I was looking away for a second. I was alone.  At night. Headphones with the volume UP. Then I heard Rena’s That’s a lie! and it made me jump from my seat. I was dazed. I turned my face and saw Rena’s yangire expression. Wait, what? What just happened? And the rest is history.

After seeing this scene the viewer realizes that this is NOT the simple silly show he thought it was. Weren’t you also surprised?

“why did it end up like this? Where did everything get so messed up? When I thought I beleived in everybody.. when did I stop believing? Why.. to my friends that love.. Why am I doing something this horrible?

A rather spoil-ish quote if you haven’t finished Higurashi. This is the key moment when Rena has finally been able to break free of her own dementia and is able to see the ‘truth’. She understands that what she is been doing is wrong and wishes to stop the madness. The moment is very memorable because for the first time it seems that the main characters will be able to break the circle of loops after for so long. I couldn’t believe it. I was left speechless.

Timote

Lucky Star

As time goes by without anyone eating it, it starts getting dry and looking anything but appetizing, and no one’s willing to make a move, but when the busboy takes it you go ‘wait, we’re not done with that yet.’ kinda on reflex. but then you end up leaving without eating it. (Izumi Konata)

LS is a strange show for some. It certainly isn’t for everyone. It’s a hit or miss really. For me this show came at the right time. The quote you see above is one of the many ramblings that LS is so famous for. What makes LS interesting is how it mixes some mundane humor and otaku references and manage to make it interesting. It turns simple and mundane lines that you might have thought before (that didn’t seem interesting) into barrels of laughter. You go ‘oh, wait. I know what she means! That was totally the case for me.’ That’s the type of things that make fans treasure this show.

Anata-wa gundam

Mobile Suit gundam 00

“While we are talking of peace, people are dying.” (Setsuna F Seiei)

“I am Gundam.”

Setsuna, a child soldier, who had far from a normal life, had his biggest dream come true when he became a gundam meister.  His famous ‘ore-wa Gundam’ makes it more than redundant that his sole existence is to bring conflict in the world to end. Still, Setsuna is impulsive and he’s been reprimanded for this by other meisters several times. He can’t stand still to what is happening around the world thus he cannot understand Marina Ismail’s reasoning as he sees it futile to stop violence with words only. The word can’t change with words only. I think I heard that one before.

The only thing you can change about the past is how you feel about it in the present. (Lockon Stratos)

Among so many idealists in the world of Gundam 00, Lock was one of the few you struck me as real and down to earth. Although he was part of the meister he always brought the reality to the story.  He is the opposite of Setsuna who lives in the past. He encourages him to check his view on life and change.

“I must not run away”

Neon Genesis Evangelion

“Mankind’s greatest fear is Mankind itself.” (Gendo Ikari)

I do not like Gendo one bit but I think this is definitely true. Who else is to blame for everything bad that happens? While some work to make the best, others work against them. People cannot be united. There’s a conflict going on of goodness and evil since the beginning of time with no sign of ever stopping. Is God right? Is God wrong? Is mankind wrong? Is mankind right? In the end, humans are humans. If there is something to fear is themselves.

Gods in his Heaven, and All’s Right with the World. (The Nerv Logo)

Actually, this phrase is open for interpretation. Don’t be picky. One is that God has humans in his care and that he will take care of  them. The Nerv’s organization apparent goal is to stop the complete obliteration of mankind in other words to stop God from destroying humans. The second one and the one I think Nerv is referring to is that things are as they should be as long as God does not step into the territory of humans. This quote reminds the viewer of the mission of the main characters’. That they must do what they must to keep living even if it means reveling against their own creator.

Nakamas

One piece

I’ve set myself to become the King of the Pirates…and if I die trying…then at least I tried! (Monkey D. Luffy)

As you all know, I’m not big on shounen but One piece is one of the few that I occasionally give a break. If we’re talking about conviction and dreams then Luffy is full of them. Luffy is frank, clueless, and less than average intelligent but he fights for his dream to become king of the pirates. He believes in his friends and they believe in him. It’s admirable how he never loses sight himself or his dream no matter how tough his quest gets. If you haven’t heard this quote before you probably haven’t watched the show.

Weakness is a sin. (Crocodile)

Crocodile is another one of the main villains of One Piece. He has total control of the kingdom of Alabastar and has fooled people into believing he is a good guy. Crocodile follows the law of the fittest. The weak must die and the strong one must live. In Crocodile’s dictionary the word ‘weakness’ does not exist. It’s fairly memorable because that’s something that a character like him would say although it isn’t completely original.

Days of the samurai

Samurai Champloo

“Forget all that formal crap ’bout comin’ at me one at a time. I’ll take all you bitches on!.” (Mugen)

Mugen is fearless. He might die today or the next day but he does not give a damn. Just know that if he dies he’s taking you all on with him to hell.

“I have no desire to kill you. In fact, you’re not worth killing. Killing you, will only tarnish my blade.” (Jin)

Jin is the level-headed character of the show. Jin represents the ideal version of a samurai in this show. He is intelligent, prideful and always thinks things through. His personality contrasts well with Mugen who he perceives as a brute compared to him. This quote fits him well since he shows his restrain and also looks down on the opponent by saying they aren’t worthy of being killed by him. The value of his sword is far greater of that of the opponent being talked to.

Someone is in despair

Sayonara Setzubou Sensei

“I’m in despair!”

“The biggest mistake in my life is that I was born!!’ (Itoshiki Nozomu)

Itoshiki must be one of the biggest suicidal characters (and with most failed attempts) in all anime history. Fact that the show make vast fun of. His ‘zetsuboushita’ catchphrase is largely known by most anime fans and also used to express well, despair. His catchphrase is so known that it is also stolen by his students. You don’t need to tell me why this quote is here.

A Coma doesn’t exist , it is a preparatory research for the next life… “Fuura Kafuka”

Kafuka is a unique character and I don’t exactly mean it in a positive way. Her cheerfulness borders into the realm of creepiness and something else. It’s always amusing how she views the world is such extremely positive way that no normal human could.  While watching SZS the viewer learns Fuura is a mental case who has fooled herself into buying what she professes.  In this quote is a good example of it. Even in coma which most people would consider a terrible thing to happen to anyone, Kafuka considers it as something positive. She sees it as a preparation instead of a terrible misfortune. If there’s a term that I would call this type of seriously creepy optimistic thinking would be “Kafuka positive thinking”. Quotes like this are memorable because even without knowing who said it you make a good guess who the person is.

We are all connected

Serial Experimental Lain

If you’re not remembered, then you never existed. (Iwakura Lain)

Mankind is a creature that no longer evolves, is it not? One theory says that man is a neoteny and is no longer able to evolve. If this is true, then what an absurd creature mankind has evolved into. Not knowing what it is that drives them they keep their bodies merely to satisfy the desires of the flesh. They’re worthless, don’t you think? That’s all mankind is. (Eiri Masami)

There was no reason for me to stay in the real world any longer. In the real world, it didn’t matter if I was there or not. When I realized that, I was no longer afraid of losing my body. (Chisa Yomoda)

What isn’t remembered never happened. Memory is merely a record. You just need to re-write that record. (On the Last Episode)

Lain is the type of anime that you have to sit and just watch it and maybe try to understand it. It just throws you lines like this and you’re either amused, confused or sometimes both. Lain quotes are like questions that challenge how you see reality and how others do. Sometimes you agree others you don’t.

“Tawake!”

Spice and Wolf

All men are jealous and stupid, and all women are stupid to be happy about it, idiots are everywhere you look… (Horo)

Horo is so tsundere. She acts as though she is tough and all but deep down she is a real softy. Quotes like these are  covers that Horo uses to keep people away and to not let others know what she really feels–lonely. I don’t remember the moment but I’m 99% sure it had to do with her travel companion.

The Blade Children

Spiral

The melody of logic always plays the notes of truth. (Narumi Ayumu)

This is Ayumu’s catchphrase. This is what he’d say when it’s time to tells the viewers what really happened. The mood would get all serious then the music would start playing. Checkmate.  Often accompanied by his side-kick (yet useful) Ayumu would reveal all secrets and tricks that the culprit used at the end of the episode to commit the crime.  The melody of logic always plays the notes of truth means that there is no perfect crime. Logic is Ayumu’s strongest point and in his quote he tells us that there is always an answer to every question and a solution to each problem. We may not know it yet but it’s waiting for us to find it. In the end logic must prevail. Other detectives could learn a thing or two from Ayumu.

Piercing the heavens

Tengen Toppa Guren Laggan

Don’t believe in yourself! Believe in ME who believes in you!!!. (Kamina)

Even if we were to be enslaved in the galaxy’s cycle of rebirth, the feelings that were left behind will open the door! Even if we were to face against the infinite universe, our burning blood will cut through fate!. (Kamina and Simon)

TTGL is filled with encouraging phrases like these filled with some manly and encouraging quotes to not give up and to keep going no matter what. Phrases like these fit the show perfectly since the main characters fight against impossible odds to save their planet then later even the universe from annihilation.

Come join me

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

“Men are worthless. Feelings of love are just a temporary lapse in judgment, like a kind of mental illness.” (Suzumiya Haruhi )

“Have you ever realized how insignificant your existence is on the planet?” (Haruhi Suzumiya)

“I’m Haruhi Suzumiya, from East Junior High. First off, I’m not interested in ordinary people. But, if any of you are aliens, time-travelers, or espers, please come see me. That is all!” (Haruhi Suzumiya)

Unlike Kyon, Haruhi still believes in the supernatural. many for that she has somewhat detached herself from normal people and questions what most people perceive as normal or real. For most part, she isn’t interested on ‘normal’ people and the only thing that catches her attention is something out of the ordinary. Something out of this world. The quote ‘If any of you are aliens, time-travelers, or espers, please come see me. That is all.” is the message she gives to her class instead of the normal presentation she was supposed to give. Without a doubt, this phrase is well remember and recognized even if you aren’t fan of the show.

“The Santa that showed up at my Kindergarden Christmas festival? I knew he was fake. And I never saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus, either. But I have to say, even as a little kid I knew better to believe in some old man who worked only one day a year” (Kyon)

That’s pure kyon-ism right there. Lines like these are those you can’t help but grin then chuckle then burst out laughing. Kyon’s lines makes the viewer question whether it was supposed to be funny or not in the first place which is always great.  It’s ok. Never mind. Let’s continue. Oh wait. I know what he means now. Oh snap Kyon.

It actually is

Welcome to NHK!

“It’s a conspiracy”

NHK is definitely one of the strangest, most realistic, disturbing (in a good way) and powerful shows I’ve watched. Satou is a hikikomori who suffers from serious psychological issues and whose life went to hell after he finished high school. He is considered a pest. An ‘useless human’ who has delusions of being targeted by an evil organization to screw his life over. As a result he blames the conspiracy for everything bad that happens in his life and goes into ‘it’s a conspiracy’ mode when he is too stressed or when he fails at something, which happens a lot. The quote resembles him and the show well because it is repeated innumerable number of times.

The day the devil was born

shame on you if you thought I was going to end this post without mentioning Code Geass :p

Code Geass

I am sorry, but I cannot be friends with a goddess, because I have signed a contract with a devil.

This is Zero’s cool way of telling Kaguya to not become interested in him.
I always found it amusing the way he words sentences because there are hidden meanings in some of them. I interpreted this line that he already had someone he liked.

You’re not alone. We are partners. If you are a witch, then I’ll become a warlock. (Lelouch)

Hook, line and sink. This is the phrase that probably won CC over. Hearing Lelouch say something this sounds so right based on his personality. Lelouch knows well the destiny that CC and that all her life has been called an evil witch. Lelouch tells her that he’ll become as much if not more than what she is. Both of them will be equal. She is not alone anymore.

‘The world cannot be changed with pretty words alone.’

‘If strength is justice, then is powerlessness a crime?’

Lelouch is someone you do not want to get into an argument with, simply because no matter what topic it is you will lose. I liked how he always asks questions that aren’t easy to answer. Is vengeance evil? Can friendship coexist with justice?  Contradictory thoughts quickly overwhelm the viewer and make him question himself for a moment.  But it doesn’t what the answer would be because the next moment. You will be dead. He goes.

“Lelouch Vi Britannia commands you”

“If the king doesn’t move, then his subjects won’t follow.”

Lelouch’s chess strategy. He is the king. In chess, the king piece is the only one that shouldn’t move unless in checkmate. The other chess pieces are the ones that move around and fight while protecting the king. In Lelouch’s case, he (the king) moves around like he pleases. This is his strategy. You can see the confusion of the players and enemies that he goes against when he makes this incredible shocking move. If the king doesn’t move, then his subjects won’t follow is the perfect phrase for a leader that is willingly to put everything on the line in order to win.

Cliche lines aside, quotes are a big part of the shows we enjoy. We hear them. We listened to them. We understand them. We doubt them and challenge them at some point. A few times they even inspire us and makes us wish we could come up with such great lines when we need them.  What it is surprising is that some quotes end up making more sense than we initially thought they would. Some are more memorable than others and we need to hear them again to be reminded of that special moment. Other lines  we cannot bring ourselves to disagree with what they say simply because we find truth in the statement. It’s true that it’s difficult to remember every single quote even of the show we like but some moments or catch phrases are permanently engraved in the back of our minds.

Well, that’s it. Long post was long. While this isn’t a comprehensive list I think I covered many different shows since I kept it fairly varied for everyone. Hopefully, you found at least one show you really liked or a quote you can relate to in this post.

  1. The Haruhi quote:

“I’m Haruhi Suzumiya, from East Junior High. First off, I’m not interested in ordinary people. But, if any of you are aliens, time-travelers, or espers, please come see me. That is all!”

always grabbed me, because I’d always felt sort of similar. Life was boring. But beyond the clouds somwhere was some real excitement.

Fittingly, I really connected with the corollary Kyon quote as well:

However, it took me quite a bit longer to realize that the aliens, time-travelers, ghosts, monsters and espers in those effects-filled ‘good guys versus evil organization’ cartoons didn’t actually exist either. No, wait, I probably did realize, I just didn’t want to admit it. Deep inside my heart, I still wanted those aliens, time-travelers, ghosts, monsters, espers and evil organizations to suddenly appear. Compared to this boring, normal life of mine, the world of those flashy shows was much more exciting; I wanted to live in that world, too!

    • Kyon is a believer even though he denies it.

In a world where almost everything can explained with science, everything is black or white. Where almost no mysteries are left in the world, the very idea that something else we don’t know might exist is strangely amusing.

Kyon is the type of guy people can relate to in some aspects. I think that one of the many reasons why Kyon is still on my top fav characters. Because he symbolizes the extremely logical person who still wishes to believe that ‘something’ new and exciting exists in the world.

Sometimes is scary how similar some of these characters are to us when we paid close attention to them.

  2. OMG! The Cowboy Bebop quote brings all the memories back. Cowboy Bebop always focuses on different story for each episode but it somehow manages to demonstrate its characters with incredible depths and complexities, thanks to great script and, of course, quotes like this. I feel like watching it all over again.

    • For the longest time I was hesitant to watch Cowboy Bebop (it happened years ago). One day I decided to watch it once and for all to know why fans loved it so much. After watching it wasn’t difficult to understand why Cowboy Bebop is a show that fans keep (and will) referring back to.

      “Bang”

  3. Interesting how you picked pretty much only popular anime (apart from Spiral, that’s kinda the wrong one out here). It reminds you why these anime were popular in the first place. Behind all the OTT of the likes of Geass and Elfen Lied, there’s a brain behind them that means they work.

    • I should’ve added more less popular shows (possible post?) but this group works great for both new and old anime fans since they’re easy to pick up. Still, I’m sure there are still some fans that aren’t familiar with all of them like most of us are XD At least I can say that there is a higher chance that not everyone is that familiar with Gankutsuou, Excel Saga, Genshiken or GTO. I don’t know many rare shows so feedback on that is welcome.

  4. wow that first Lain phrase shocked me a lot .there have been 5 years since I watched Lain and I still remember it.

Also higurashi one, I think that probably that phrase made me a follower of all that author works. Umineko has some great ones too. But there is something strange after seeing that first scene do you really thought that higurashi would be a funny show?

there also another ones that I know too as Evangelion, GTO, Spice and wolf and Death note.

    • The element of surprise helped a lot.

Before I watched Higurashi I had no idea that I was going to get. I saw a show with a long title that made me think that I’ll never be able to remember it and a long description that made me go tl;dr half way.

The first episode was nothing special and I started to think that I was watching the wrong show. I downloaded the second episode and decided to watch it the next day late at night. Surprise. Surprise. That’s when I knew that I was witnessing something I wouldn’t forget. It goes without saying that after Higurashi I became a Ryukishi07 fan and well here I am.
