AM I NOT MERCIFUL?
First Batch of Thoughts about the Spring shows. This post contains First Impressions for Shangri-la, Queen’s Blade, Asura Crying, Pandora Hearts, Ristorante Paradiso, Saki and Basquash merely based on the first episode. Thoughts might be subject to change as the season goes on. Similarity tags are based on the feeling that I get when I watch the show they don’t necessarily have to do with the actual story. Reviews by MAL and impressions by me. This is so not much fun.
Shangrila : The story is set in a neo-futuristic age, in which Tokyo has turned into the world’s largest “jungle-polis” that absorbs carbon dioxide. A tower city called Atlas houses the rich and privileged, and is the object of yearning of all who are not allowed to enter. But Atlas also has ancient secrets which cause a sudden whirl of events. Festooned by colorful characters such as a riotous teenage girl, a child genius, a juvenile princess, a drag queen, a female doctor, an army major, and an elderly gentleman and lady, SHANGRI-LA’s hard-core world view plays out as an anime action saga.. read more

Good GONZO. I knew that Shangri-la wans’t going to be the most interesting anime of this season but I never expected it to this boring I think that I banged my head against the desk a couple of times while watching it. Carbon police? Fugly traps. Economics? You kidding me right? I thought to myself oh noes! this is like the first season of Gundam 00 with the natural resources but without the Gundams or Spice and Wolf with the economy lessons without Horo. You might not know this but I find economics and statistics to be terribly boring. I once took a class about natural resources and I dropped it after the first week when I find it hard to keep my eyes open. Sorry but I got enough of that in school and I don’t need any in my anime. If you’re willing to overlook the boring part of the story you might consider sticking to Shangri-la see how it goes. You certainly have a higher level of tolerance than I. I’ll give you that.
Queen’s Blade : A competition to decide the next Queen. The strongest warrior will rule the country and expand it. The contestants need to be older than 12. They need not be human, intelligent or even of that country. The rules for the tournament: murder is allowed. Any weapon can be chosen.

QB presents itself with ecchi that borders pron. The first ep was filled with ecchi that some people might offensive. The story was close to non-existent and the stupidity of the show was just hilarious. Perhaps the only good thing that QB accomplished was to get a reaction from me, maybe not a positive but at least it made bigger impression compared to some of the other Spring shows. Good enough to make me remember it for it. If I’m bored enough I might pick this up. LOL @ Aya Hirano and Mamiko Noto for being on it though.
Verdict : PASS
Asura Cryin’ : Tomoharu is a normal high school student… except for he’s not alone. Haunted by the ghost of his dead childhood best friend, he moves into a new home in time for the new school year. That becomes a little more difficult than anticipated when his house becomes overrun with various female occult users. Even worse than that he has been pulled into a fight to protect a trunk within the house that others want to steal.

Without the g ’cause it’s cool. I was under the impression that this was drama. Asura Cryin’ was nothing like that. It features a rather cheery ghost girl who is friends with the main character and strange crap goes down. It did have some positive points but it most of it was overshadowed by the silliness of what followed. The best thing was the show was that I didn’t find myself yawing as I did with Shangri-la. It might become interesting if done correctly.. and feature more mikos.
Verdict: might watch
Pandora Hearts: Oz Bezarius, heir to one of the duke houses, has just turned fifteen. His life is rich and carefree, darkened only by the constant absence of his father. At his coming-of-age ceremony, however, everything changes. For no reason that he can discern, he’s cast into the prison known as the “Abyss”, only to be saved by a “chain” known as Alice, the bloodstained black rabbit. Why was he cast into Abyss, how does Alice factor into it all, and what does the organization known as “Pandora” want with him…?

I actually cannot manage to say something positive about Pandora Hearts. It was so plain that it almost hurt. Young master finds evil item/relic, in a crucial day, he sees a freaky vision. Something bad is going to happen to him to soon. You get the idea. Hopefully, the main character is ported to some other world where something interesting actually HAPPENS then I’ll consider watching it. I’ll give it a plus it it features rabbits.
Verdict: might PASS
Ristorante Paradiso : 21 year-old Nicoletta leaves her grandparents’ home in the countryside to work in Rome at a restaurant owned by her estranged mother’s lover. But something sets the popular and elegant Casetta Dell’orso apart from its rivals: the entire restaurant is staffed by older gentlemen wearing glasses (as per her mother’s preference). Thrown into this adult world, Nicoletta must try to find personal and professional stability – things that become increasingly difficult to achieve as she falls under the spell of Casetta Dell’orso

This is a rather odd show. First off, the character design and the freaky eyes threw me off. The story? We didn’t’ get much of it really. The story is about a girl that goes to Rome and she stumbles upon this restaurant where fabulous mid-age men work as waiters. Maybe it’s because they just randomly throw Italian phrases at me. I felt like I was watching ARIA but without the cute girls and the fuzzy feeling and instead I got some old fabulous guys. You get the idea. I can’t say that I’m interested in watching the main girl of the story get into a romantic relationship with some old guy married guy and his buddies, who btw look rather creepy if you ask me. At any rate, if this turns into some dark Mafia show with a lot of wise guys I’ll be the first to pick it up. Otherwise, you can forget about it.
Verdict: might watch
Saki : Miyanaga Saki is a very skilled mahjong player. One day she gets dragged into the Mahjong Club and surprises some of the other members by being able to break even after every round, a play style that developed due to the fact that her family would get mad if she won whenever they played so she would carefully lose on purpose. But here’s the catch, she hates mahjong

What it really needs: better moe, be more interesting.
Keikaku doori : few
Last time I checked Mahjong and anime = good. I actually had some expectations from Saki because of it. A combination of mahjong and moe doesn’t sound that bad to me. However what I received was something different. All the characters are just unappealing to me. They are rather boring and ugly if you ask me. It’s not that there it has lousy animation; it’s just that I plain dislike the overly bright colors and characters designs that it uses. It might become interesting if they introduce actual interesting characters otherwise I might drop this Saki too. This might come as rather cruel but there’s a reason why GONZO are finding themselves in the position they are now. Need more quality anime!
Verdict : might watch
Basquash : On the planet Earthdash, its inhabitants gaze on its moon and the technologically advanced lunar city of Mooneyes with awe. Dan JD, a boy living in Rollingtown on Earthdash’s surface, gets caught up in Bigfoot Basketball — a fast-paced sport played with giant Bigfoot robots.

What it really needs : something that I care about
Keikaku doori : none
What can I say? This story is set in some year where basketball is now played by mechas. Yes big robots named BIG FOOT. For what I manage to grasp is that the main guy or rather kid of the story hates these BIG FOOT for making basketball boring and for putting her sister in a wheelchair. I’ll make this clear I have close to zero interest in Anime sports and even less for basketball so it’s no surprise that I share the same level of interest for this anime. First Mahjong and now basketball.. The level of the animation was great but I’m not a fan of the odd character design. I don’t get the feeling that this is going to be a terrible show. I’m just not interested in what it has to offer and hearing the word Big Foot in engrish every five minutes.
Verdict : PASS
Second and last batch coming soon.
